GM 1914

The First World War in Greater Manchester

About GM1914

Welcome to GM1914. This is a joint volunteer project between the archives and local studies services across Greater Manchester.

2014 was the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. This devastating conflict had enormous impact upon the lives of local people. In Greater Manchester we want to remember the impact of the Great War on our communities and our people by exploring the archives and discovering stories.

What does the Great War mean to you? How did it affect your family? Did any of your relations have their lives changed by the experiences of the years 1914 to 1918?
We need people who can offer some time to look through the records, search local newspapers, find great images, scan fascinating items and write up the stories which will be published here.

Please contact any of our partners – see map below – if you would like to contribute a story or carry out your own research.

  1. “The Now & Then Show” is a magazine show broadcasting twice a day on AllFM 96.9, a community radio station based in Levenshulme. We have read your blogs and would love to share them with our listeners by reading them out as part of a proposed long term series that will focus on the history and heritage of Greater Manchester.
Could we please have your permission to use your material as part of our broadcast. In addition, would you be willing to come on to the show to talk about the Blog and the research you are doing?
You can contact us on this email address or check out our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Now-and-Then
Hope to hear from you soon.

  2. Hi, I work for a radio station called Bolton FM. I’m putting a show together called ‘The Home Front’ show. This will be going out in November. I’m looking for people who have any stories from WW1 or WW2, who would not mind being interviewed. Also, I am looking for messages of remembrance for your lost love ones to be read out on air.

    1. Hi Travis,

I have sent you an email with some more information that will hopefully be of use to you and your programme.

      Thanks,
      Dylan
